Description

This session will highlight the unique and different approaches to clinical practice that respect cultural diversity, including modifications to standard correctional policies that reflect the cultural needs of the many communities in New Mexico. In addition, the speaker will explore specific approaches for working with incarcerated women while being culturally competent, with an eye toward improving cultural competency in a broader correctional setting.

  • Review the unique challenges of working as a correctional mental health professional in a culturally diverse border state
  • Discuss potential differences between working with men and working with women in a culturally competent manner
  • Describe ways to combat intergenerational criminal thinking patterns using a culturally sensitive approach
