210 Rethinking Solitary Confinement Policies and Disrupting the "Mental Illness to Prison" Pipeline

Studies show that prolonged solitary confinement leads to severe distress, mental deterioration, and exacerbated mental health issues. This analysis reviews existing restrictive housing policies pertaining to the conditions of confinement, reasons for confinement, and access to mental health resources for those incarcerated with behavioral health disabilities. The study found important differences in policies and procedures for states with high versus low per capita spending on mental health care.
