Dr. O'Connor has been providing care to individuals with substance use disorder for more than 15 years. She currently serves as the director of addiction medicine at Somerset County Jail and has developed and implemented an extended-release buprenorphine program for inmates with opioid use disorder. In addition to her work in corrections, Dr. O'Connor serves as the medical advisor of the Maine Maternal Opioid Misuse (MaineMOM) Initiative, a 5-year, million federal grant to expand access to substance use treatment for pregnant and postpartum women. She is the first director of perinatal addiction medicine at Maine Medical Center, the state's largest hospital, and trains both resident physicians and addiction medicine fellows. She has extensive addiction medicine experience in a variety of clinical settings including inpatient and outpatient, the emergency department, correctional facilities, recovery courts as well as with outreach teams that see high-risk patients in the community.

Dr. O'Connor has published numerous peer-reviewed articles on maternal and infant outcomes following buprenorphine exposure during pregnancy as well as the care of pregnant patients in correctional settings. She lectures locally, regionally and nationally on a variety of topics related to substance use disorder to a range of audiences including medical providers, the judiciary and law enforcement. Finally, Dr. O'Connor co-chairs Maine's Opioid Response Clinical Advisory Committee, which advises the Governor's opioid response director on clinical and public policy issues.
