Name
110 Community Partnerships to Improve Care for Individuals With SMI*
Description
Many justice-involved individuals with serious mental illness could be served in the community rather than jail, and they often consume security and correctional health resources that could be more appropriately utilized elsewhere. Forming collaborative relationships between unexpected stakeholders can create an environment where many lower-risk individuals with serious mental illness can be released from jail into community-based care. These effective partnerships can lead to better outcomes, reduced recidivism, and cost savings. Speakers will provide practical examples of collaboration at a variety of points along the Sequential Intercept Model.
Educational Objectives
- Distinguish points of engagement where people can exit the justice system and return to the community for care
- Discuss variables that make certain candidates more appropriate for diversion
- Identify collaborations that can navigate individuals from the jail to the community
